History
Tesla Roadster was officially unveiled on July 19th 2006 in California. In San Francisco International Auto Show, Tesla has officially unveiled Roadster on Nov 18th 2006.
Initially, Tesla Roadster hit the roads on Feb 2008. The company has produced around 500 similar vehicles in June 2009. Thereafter, Tesla began its production for 2010 models.
Motor
Tesla Roadster is powered by a 4-pole electric motor that can produce maximum output power of 248 hp. The maximum torque generated is around 200 ft-lb. One of the major differences and the common feature for the vehicle is with respect to the combustion engines.
Motor in the vehicle is air cooled and it doesn’t require any liquid cooling system. Sport Model in the line-up was introduced at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show, which includes higher density motor that can produce maximum power of 288 hp.
Both the motors were designed with adequate rotational speeds of around 14,000 rpm, and regular motor in the vehicle delivers typical efficiency of around 88% or 90% at peak power of 80%. The vehicle weighs pretty much less than 70 pounds (32 kg).
Performance
Roadster – standard version can sprint from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.9 seconds and for the 2010 Sport Model, it will take 3.7 seconds. It is recorded that the vehicle can reach quarter-mile test in just 12.6 sec at 102.6 mph.
Recharging
Tesla Roadster will make use of proprietary charging connector, It uses Tesla retail mobile adapter, which enables recharging with the help of a SAE J1772-2009 connector. It can also be recharged with the help of wall-mounted 208–240 volt connector.
